February 9 - readings for Feb 11

Today's readings: Gen 44; Mk 14; Job 10; Ro 14

Mark 14:37-41 Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldnʼt you stay awake for one hour? Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” He went away again and prayed the same thing. When he came again he found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to tell him. He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough of that! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Mark 14:58-59 “We heard him say, ʻI will destroy this temple made with hands and in three days build another not made with hands.ʼ” Yet even on this point their testimony did not agree.

Mark 14:61-62 But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Job 10:10 Did you not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese?

February 6-8 - readings for Feb 8-10

Feb 8: Gen 41; Mk 11; Job 7; Ro 11

Mark 11:24-25 For this reason I tell you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your sins.”

Feb 9: Gen 42; Mk 12; Job 8; Ro 12

Mark 12:12 Now they wanted to arrest him (but they feared the crowd), because they realized that he told this parable against them. So they left him and went away.
Mark 12:17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesarʼs, and to God the things that are Godʼs.” And they were utterly amazed at him.
Mark 12:24 Jesus said to them, “Arenʼt you deceived for this reason, because you donʼt know the scriptures or the power of God?
Mark 12:27 He is not the God of the dead but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
Mark 12:33-34 And to love him with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Then no one dared any longer to question him.

Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another.
Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Feb 10: Gen 43; Mk 13; Job 9; Ro 13

Romans 13:8-10 Owe no one anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not covet,” (and if there is any other commandment) are summed up in this, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Romans 13:14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to arouse its desires.

February 5 - readings for Feb 7

Today's readings: Gen 40; Mk 10; Job 6; Ro 10

Mark 10: 26 They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?”
Note: The assumption is that the rich are blessed, so if they risk exclusion, who is left to be saved?

February 4 - readings for Feb 6

Today's readings: Gen 39; Mk 9; Job 5; Ro 9

Mark 9:22 It has often thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Mark 9:31-32 for he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.

Job 5:19 He will deliver you from six calamities;
yes, in seven no evil will touch you.
Note: The use of a numerical ladder as we have here - "six // seven" is frequent in wisdom literature to show completeness. See Prov 6:16; Amos 1:3, Mic 5:5. A number that seems to be sufficient for the point is increased by one, as if to say there is always one more. By using this Eliphaz simply means "in all troubles"

Romans 9:6 It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel,

Romans 9:22-23 But what if God, willing to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath prepared for destruction? And what if he is willing to make known the wealth of his glory on the objects of mercy that he has prepared beforehand for glory -

February 3 - readings for Feb 5

Today's readings: Gen 38; Mk 8; Job 4; Ro 8

Gen 38:7 But Er, Judahʼs firstborn, was evil in the Lordʼs sight, so the Lord killed him.
Gen 38:10 What he did was evil in the Lordʼs sight, so the Lord killed him too.

Mark 8:29 He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”

Mark 8:34 Then Jesus called the crowd, along with his disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit.
Romans 8:7 because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.

Romans 8:22-23 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together until now. Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

February 2 - readings for Feb 4

Today's readings: Gen 37; Mk 7; Job 3; Ro 7

Gen 37:21 When Reuben heard this, he rescued Joseph from their hands, saying, “Letʼs not take his life!”
Gen 37:26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

Job 3:25  For the very thing I dreaded has happened to me, and what I feared has come upon me.

Romans 7:5-6 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the law, because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code.

February 1 - readings for Feb 3

Today's readings: Gen 35-36; Mk 6; Job 2; Ro 6

Mark 6:2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did he get these ideas? And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these miracles that are done through his hands?

Mark 6:6 And he was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around among the villages and taught.

Mark 6:16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!”

Mark 6:20 because Herod stood in awe of John and protected him, since he knew that John was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, and yet he liked to listen to John.

Mark 6:52 because they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.
seems pretty much parallel to:
Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
and:
Romans 6:6 We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Romans 6:12-14 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires, and do not present your members to sin as instruments to be used for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments to be used for righteousness. For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace.
